Consumer agency seals Abuja Chinese supermarket for discriminating against Nigerians

Boladale Adeyinka, the director for surveillance and investigation of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council, FCCPC, on Monday, led other officials of the agency to seal up a Chinese supermarket, located in Abuja , for discriminatory practices.

The agency acted on the public complaints about the supermarket barring Nigerians from accessing it to make purchases.

Adeyinka stated that the supermarket was shut down at the time the enforcement unit arrived at the premises, located along Airport Road in the Federal Capital Territory.

She identified the owner as a Chinese woman by name Cinndy Liu Bei. Adeyinka implied the owner might have fled to evade the agency, stating that a closed circuit television showed that the woman and another leaving the premises early Monday morning.

TheCornet reports that the public backlash and media attention that greeted the revelation about the operation of the foreign-owned shop might have triggered the owner’s escape.

Adeyinka said, “The essence of the surveillance and investigation that we conducted today is to verify the allegations and the content of that viral video.

“On arrival, we noticed that the supermarket which is right behind me, was sealed and padlocked externally. Inquiries have shown that yes, as this morning this supermarket was open and people were here.

“CCTV footage also shows that in the morning, two vehicles departed from these very premises allegedly containing the owner of the supermarket, whom we have been able to identify by name and we have her contact details.”

Adeyinka urged the owner of the supermarket to report to the commission on Wednesday. She warned that the agency would deploy its powers, if she owner fails to honour the summon.
