Opposition in Imo allege bias against INEC

In Imo state on Tuesday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) opposed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for asking press cameramen not to record the consultation with party representatives ahead of the state governorship election.

Kenneth Ukeagu, INEC’s commissioner for south-east region, gave the order to the journalists.

In their response, the opposition insisted the media must be allowed to witness the parley and the disagreement led to a confrontation among the parties’ representatives.

Equally, the opposition said INEC’s decision to retain its state’s resident electoral commissioner, Slyvia Agu, suggests a bias against them. They alleged Agu is blood relations with a high ranking chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

INEC however challenged Agu’s accusers to presented any misdeamnor she committed.

Incumbent Governor Hope Uzodima is facing a fierce reelection battle. Apart from the opposition parties, the governor is also pitched against the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

As an aftermath of the manhandling of its president, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri where he was prepping workers for a protest, the NLC in the state declared a strike on Tuesday.

Uzodima and his party said the NLC is only leading a politicians and predetermined battle. They accused Ajaero, who is from the state, of having an interest in the forthcoming election.
