Hardship: Tinubu ordered sale of seized foods

The Nigerian Customs Service has said that President Bola Tinubu had approved the sale of seized foods in its custody, as a way of mitigating the food inflation. Bashir Adeniyi, comptroller-general of NCS, revealed this when he appeared before the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Adeniyi had also told the lawmakers that the agency intercepted 120 trucks, along the Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama Roads, Borno State. The trucks were carrying food items to neighbouring countries. The trucks were heading to Chad Republic, Central African Republic, and Cameroon, he said.

“Also, the President has also directed that imported food items seized by the Nigeria Customs Service should be sold back to the local markets for resale to Nigerians.

“We started in Lagos but you know what happened. There was a stampede. No matter the number of bags of rice you share or sell, it will not be enough.

“We have to focus on one place at a time. We will use the lessons we learnt in Lagos to coordinate this programme when we resume,” he said.
