Three bag jail terms for currency trafficking

Three people have been found guilty and given varying prison sentences by the Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday for selling the country’s currency to generate profits.

The prosecuting Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, told Judge Evelyn Anyadike during the proceeding that the defendants’ actions contravened the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007’s Section 21(4).

Section 21 (1) of the Act prohibits anyone from trading in naira notes.

After listening to the parties, Justice Anyadike imprisoned the three defendants namely Asmau Wuraola, Owoduni Abdullahi Isa, and Shuaibu Rukayat.

In Wuraola’s case, Justice Anyandike imprisoned her for two months or an option of N50,000 fine. She is also to forfeit the sum of N1,020,000  recovered from her to the Federal Government. The EFCC was also ordered to destroy the POS machine recovered from her.

For Isa, he is to spend six months in prison or an option of N50,000. She is also forfeit N150,000  recovered from him to the Federal Government. The same for Rukayat, who was sentenced to six months imprisonment or N50,000 fine and the sum of N200,000 forfeited to the Federal Government.
