Terrorism: Gumi challenges FG

An Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, who is known to have links to terrorists operating in Nigeria, has faulted the decision of the federal government to label his associate, Mallam Tukur Mamu, as a terrorist financier.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, had revealed 15 persons who are terrorism financiers, including Mamu.

As per Daily Trust report, Gumi argued that only the court can declare a citizen as a terrorism financier. He explained that, the government should have waited for the court ruling, since it is already prosecuting Mamu for terrorism.

“Mamu’s case is in the court. It’s wrong to resort to media trial.”

“Who declares someone a terrorist financer? Is it the court of law or a security agency?, Gumi queried.

He added, “Security agency has no right to declare anyone a terrorist financer.”

“Let’s wait for the court to state of he is a financier or not. I think if he is acquitted, he has a strong case to make on libel,” Gumi, a medical doctor by profession, stated.

Security agencies arrested Mamu in Cairo, capital of Egypt, in September 2022. Prior, he was the lead negotiator between bandits and kidnapped passengers of a Kaduna-bound train. The incident happened in March 2022.
