INEC putting Nigeria’s democracy at risk – Atiku

Abubakar Atiku, a former presidential candidate, has said Nigeria would lack ‘healthy democracy’ due to faulty elections.

Atiku said this at an event hosted by the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC). He berated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the conduct of off-cycle elections, especially in Kogi State. In his words, “INEC doubled down on its disregard for the tenets of our democracy.”

Atiku alleged that “INEC declared a result in Kogi State where the total number of votes cast is higher than the total number of accredited voters in one local government.”

“We cannot have a healthy democracy in an environment where all INEC does is to deliver for the ruling party at all costs,” the former Nigerian vice president declared.

For Nigeria to have better elections, Atiku advised National Assembly to adopt recommendations he gave on constitutional and electoral reforms during his recent press conference. One of them, he said, is the electronic voting.

As a way of unseating the ruling party, Atiku urged the opposition to coalesce to form a strong force.
