I didn’t endorse Peter Obi, Sultan of Sokoto fumes over fake newsÂ

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has denied endorsing Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi.

He described as “fake news” a letter the Obi campaigners attributed to him, in which he purportedly rejected the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Sultan said he was quoted as saying in the fake endorsement that Nigerians should “hold me responsible if Peter Obi didn’t perform well.”

The revered northern ruler was equally purported to have said that “the problem of the North is from the north, not Peter Obi or an Igbo man, (and) it will be worst (sic)and more deadly for the North if Tinubu wins.”

Clarifying, Abubakar said, “the statement is fake” and “an irresponsible write-up” that “could not have emanated” from him.”

The monarch noted that it was not the first time Obi’s supporters would issue such “misleading statement”… “in an effort to climb on the influential personality and name of the Sultan to score political goals.”

But, “unfortunately for these pitiable political campaigners, Sultan of Sokoto is – strictly speaking – a traditional ruler and leader of Muslims of Africa’s most populous country.”

Abubakar said he would relent in his leadership role and he would ” continue to support all efforts that will lead to success of the election process.”
