Many killed, several properties torched in Benue

Many villagers in Effeche and Igama communities, in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, are feared dead in an attack that took place on Sunday.

The assailants are unknown and so is the their reason for the onslaught.

The human casualty toll is said to be no fewer than 11, and several houses, torched.

Some villagers alleged the deadly invasion was continuing as at 9:30pm Sunday night.

According to them, the gunmen began to shoot sporadically on entering the communities.

Amina Audu, chairman of Okpokwu LGA, said she had received three corpses from Okpoga and another six corpses were brought from Igama.

She added the victims were youths. The attackers reportedly took compassion on the elderly and women and allowed them flee.

“I’m right now at the police station in Okpoga awaiting the corpses, soldiers and other security men are here with me,” she said.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue Command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident.

“The incident is confirmed but the command is yet to receive details from officers who went to the scene,” she said in a text message.
