‘Emefiele’s detention politically motivated’

Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani, both lawyers, have described as politically motivated the continued detention of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The concerned lawyers said that the Depart of State Services (DSS) continue to ignore the court orders for Emefiele’s release.

Cited by Opara are the orders of release reportedly given by Justice M. A. Hassan, of the Garki FCT high court;

Justice Hamza Muazu, Maitama FCT high court judge; and that Justice Bello Kawu, APO FCT high court.

The lawyers, therefore, have initiated a suit in which they urge the court to commit the DSS director-general Yussuf Bichi to prison for contempt.

In the affidavit deposed to the court, the lawyers stated that the DSS has detained Emefiele “for well over a month, while shopping for evidence which does not exist”.

Opara assured that his group of lawyers “will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion and ensure that the DSS DG is Bichi is sent to prison”.

“Is it not now clear enough to Nigerians that the SSS is persecuting Mr Emefiele if after holding him for five weeks they can only file a ridiculous charge of possessing a validly registered pump action gun?

“If possessing a validly registered pump action gun is a crime worthy of being held in perpetuity, what has the SSS done to the person threatening Nigerians from a particular section of the country with an assault rifle?
