2023: Economic Intelligence Unit predicts Atiku’s loss, cites feud with Wike

Abubakar Atiku, the presidential flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may lose the presidency in 2023, according to the prediction by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The EIU is a research and analysis-based division of the London-based Economist Group, the publishers of The Economist

Business Day is reporting that the group made the prediction in a new country report.

“Atiku has more cause to worry. Not only is Obi eating into the PDP’s South-eastern support base, but Governor Wike, who finished second in the primary, does not appear to be interested in endorsing him,” the report said.

It added that Atiku should also be worried about how Peter Obi of the Labour Party will balkanise the traditional votes of the PDP in the south-east.

The likely winner of the presidential poll, the report said, is Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We expect Tinubu to take the presidency, and recent developments have only reinforced our thinking. It does not appear that a Muslim-Muslim ticket will weigh significantly on Tinubu’s electoral chances,” EIU said
