Yoruba Nation agitator arrested in Lagos

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested one Olamilekan Odofin, a member of the self-determination organisation known as Yoruba Nation.

Benjamin Hudeyin, the spokesperson for the police, announced Odofin’s arrest on Friday.

He said, “After over a year on the run, 34-year-old Olamilekan Odofin has been arrested by officers of Ayobo Division. The suspect, on January 9, 2023, championed attacks on motorists and the police under the guise of Yoruba Nation agitation. Investigation is ongoing.”

TheCornet reports that Odofin had recorded himself in a video in which he said he and other members of his group were responsible for torching a police vehicle. He then showed the burning police van in the video.

The confrontation between the agitators and the police led to violence and shootings. A young woman died from a police stray bullet.

At the time, Hudeyin, in a statement, denied the police shot the victim. He also claimed that the agitators shot at police officers and destroyed two police vehicles.

He wrote at the time of the incident, which occurred last year: “A team of police officers, comprising Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad (RRS) promptly stepped in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroyed two vehicles in the process.

“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment.”

He also said that the police arrested Four suspects involved in the incident.  suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.
