Why Wike’s wish cannot be done – PDP chieftain Â

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike’s wish that a southerner replaces the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national chairman Iyorchia Ayu cannot be done, according to Emmanuel Agbo, a former national secretary of the opposition party.

Agbo spoke on a television programme monitored by TheCornet on Tuesday.

He said should Ayu resigns, the next in line, who is the deputy national chairman from the north-east zone of the country, would be his replacement.

This, he said, is spelt out in the party’s constitution.

He said, “ Section 35 subsection 3 of the PDP constitution says that in the event of willful resignation, incapacitation or death of any officer, say, now the national chairman as the case is, the deputy national chairman from the zone in which he comes, takes over.

“If Ayu resigns today, the person to assume his office is Umar from the North East. And Umar is not only from the North, but he’s from the North East where our presidential candidate comes from.

“They are calling for his (Ayu’s) resignation… There are constitutional impediments to this call.

Wike and four other aggrieved governors of Oyo, Abia, Benue, and Enugu, have consistently called for Ayu’s resignation. According to them, Ayu had promised to step down from his position, in the situation that the party’s presidential standard-bearer emerges from the northern part of Nigeria as himself.

In the bid to resolve the crisis facing the party, the party’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday met with Wike in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, but the meeting was deadlocked.
