US-bound Willie Obiano arrested at Lagos airport
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arrested the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The former governor was on his way to the United States before he was taken in.
It became known that Obiano was under the EFCC surveillance in 2021.
The commission had written to the Nigeria Immigration Service asking that the former governor should be placed on a watchlist.
Obiano, in his response at the time, said he had US permanent residency and would definitely return to his Houston Texas home at the end of his tenure.
Obiano has just ended his eight years tenure as governor of Anambra State on Thursday. Charles Soludo, a former banker and one-time governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank succeeded him and was sworn into office on Thursday.
The EFCC is yet to issue an official statement on the arrest.
