Trouble looms as labour plans shutting down airport, seaport, others

The struggling Nigerian economy faces deeper challenge as organised labour declares a nationwide strike that will see it shut down critical infrastructure, including the airport and seaport.

The likely occurrence follows the decision of the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to join national labour unions planning a shutdown of the economy over the federal government’s delay in implementing unfurling economic reliefs meant to cushion the hardship facing Nigerians.

The OPS comprises the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, (MAN); Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Nigeria Employers Consultative Association; Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and the Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists.

The removal of petrol subsidy and rising inflation have seen commodity and transportation costs rise astronomically.

Ben Nnabue, the president of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, in a report, confirmed the union would “be joining the strike.”

For its part, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, equally asserted their readiness to join the planned strike. John Ikemefule, head of media of the union, said, “It has been confirmed that the union will be joining the NLC and TUC to shut down the country from October 3rd.”

“There will be a total and indefinite shutdown of the country. We are going to withdraw our members from jetties and terminals,’’ he stated.
