Court rulings worsen Kenyan president, judiciary’s disagreement

The disagreement between Kenyan President William Ruto and the judiciary arm of government in the eastern African country seemed to have worsened with the latest court ruling nullifying the planned deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti.

President Ruto had pledged at the United Nations to deploy his police officers on a peace intervention to Haiti, which currently faces gang violence.

The president and the judiciary have endured bitter tows and mud-slinging in the last few weeks.

Coming in the wake of the ruling was another, which stops the government from taking payments for a new housing levy.

Mr Ruto has accused unnamed judges of corruption and at the same time censured the judiciary for stopping government projects.

The BBC reported that the president’s attacks on the judges had triggered a backlash from Kenyans, including politicians and civil society.
