Teni updates status with ‘MON’ award following scornful action at event

Nigerian singer Teniola Apata speedily updated her Wikipedia page with the ‘Member of Order’ (MON) award conferred on her Tuesday, despite putting up a scornful behaviour at the award ceremony.

The singer’s seeming deviant conduct, when she walked away from President Muhammadu Buhari immediately after accepting the award, has sparked a groundswell of criticisms on social media. The ‘Uyo Meyo’ singer’s apparent scorn even had President Buhari fix a stunned gaze on her as she walked back to her seat.

Her critics believe that her conduct showed rudeness.

Some critics opined that Teni could have rejected the award, instead of putting up a protest at the prestigious event. But others, especially youths, said her conduct conveyed their indignation towards President Buhari-led government.

The 29 years old singer and child of a former soldier, who himself was a disciplinarian,  gained prominence with her debut hit single, Amen, in 2016. She subsequently upped her ante with other hit songs, such as Fargin, Askmaya among others.
