Feelers put out to know the reaction of the PDP presidential candidate Abubakar Atiku’s camp to the arrest of Hon. Chinyere Igwe on Friday morning shows the incident has put members in a dilemma.

The police said they arrested Igwe, a sitting house of representatives member, after he was found to possess $498,100 dollars and a list of how the slush money would be shared to individuals and staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in their bid to comprise the Saturday presidential poll.

According to a police statement, operatives from the “Rivers State Command deployed to INEC Headquarters Aba Road today 24/2/2023 at about 0245hrs, while on stop and search, arrested one Hon Chinyere Igwe, member House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency with a cash sum of $498,100 USD inside a bag in his car.”

The statement added “a  list for distribution of the money” was also found. Following, “the  Assistant Inspector General of Police (Election) AIG Abutu Yaro, has ordered swift interrogation and arraignment in court.”

Igwe’s arrest comes in the wake of the bombing of his radio and television stations in Port Harcourt.

The suspect is a dyed-in-the-wool support of Atiku, a former Nigerian vice president making his fifth run for the country’s presidency.
