Army accused of unlawful arrest of three

The Nigerian Army 90 Battalion in Warri, Delta State, has been accused of illegally detaining three citizens working at a dredging site. The detainees are Abraham Asagba, Goodluck Ikoyo, Igho Meeting.

Choice Umode, their lawyer, says he decided to file a fundamental human rights suit at the Delta State High Court to secure their freedom, after the army allegedly refused to release them.  He is equally seeking N20million in compensation for each of the victims.

Umode states that his clients have been in military detention for 21 days. According to him, petitions written to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali, and the General Officer, Commanding, 6 Division of Nigerian Army in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, did not yield the detainees’ release.

Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta Police Command, says he was unaware of the detention of the men.
