Police kill two in Ebonyi

The police in Ebonyi state, southeast Nigeria, have killed two persons, suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The armed victims along with other members of their gang had open fire in Okposi, a village in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state. They were part of the militant wing of the separatist group, who had imposed curfew on the region and were trying to scare residents from venturing out of the homes. The police and the gang had engaged in a shootout during their encounter.

Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who speaks for the police command, in a statement, said: “On 10/07/2023, at about 1350hrs, some armed men, suspected to be IPOB/ESN members, went to Okposi in Ohaozara LGA and started shooting sporadically into the air.

“The hoodlums engaged the policemen in a gun duel, which resulted in one of them being neutralised while the others escaped with varying degrees of bullet wounds.”

The statement read, “On 10/07/2023, at about 1350hrs, some armed men, suspected to be IPOB/ESN members, went to Okposi in Ohaozara LGA and started shooting sporadically into the air.

“The hoodlums engaged the policemen in a gun duel, which resulted in one of them being neutralised while the others escaped with varying degrees of bullet wounds.”

The police said they recovered one blue Highlander SUV “riddled with bullets”; one pump-action gun; five live cartridges; four handsets; one Sumec Fireman generator; charms; nine expended shell of AK-47 rifle ammunition, among others.”
