Ekiti Poll: Why Segun Oni told supporters to dress in white attire

Segun Oni, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has directed his supporters to dress in white attires to mark what he calls, ‘Ekiti liberation.’

Oni said this in a statement released by Ambassador Dare Bejide, the director general of his campaigns for the Saturday governorship poll.

He said, “His Excellency, Engineer Segun Oni, has directed that all members of the SDP and lovers of Ekiti all over Nigeria and the world Ekiti should wear white dress tomorrow to mark Ekiti Liberation.

“All those who are coming to the Ekiti State Pavilion for the final rally of the SDP tomorrow at 10 a.m Thursday June 16, 2022, should be in WHITE DRESSES to symbolise that our struggle is pure and we have come in peace. God bless Ekiti. Your liberation is at hand come SaturdayJune 18, 2022!”

Oni has campaigned on the mantra that his victory at poll means liberation for citizens of the state.

Until he picked the SDP ticket, Oni was in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He had lost the ticket of the PDP to Bisi Kolawole in the primary election that saw other contestants alleged the process was skewed to favour the declared winner.

Prior to his defection to the PDP – the party on which platform he became governor in 2007 until his removal in 2010 – Oni had joined the All Progressives Congress and rose to become the party’s deputy national vice chairman (South).

Engineer Oni is in the governorship race, alongside Biodun Oyebanji of the APC and 14 others.
