Lawmakers murmur, jeer at Sanwo-Olu over commissioner-nominees lineup

Legislators of the Lagos state house of assembly are dissatisfied with the commissioner-nominees’ list forwarded to it by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The composition seemed to have irked the lawmakers, who at plenary on Thursday took turns to highlight the exclusion of ‘party loyalists’ while specific local government areas had no representative in the lineup.

During the debate, Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun (Ikorodu 2) said his area contributed to the All Progressives Congress being able to return the governor for a second term and, therefore, should have more than a single nominee.

Another lawmaker, Hon. Ademola Richard Kasunmu, said Governor Sanwo-Olu failed to pick a nominee from Ikeja, the state capital. Ditto Hon. David Setonji, who stated that Badagry did not get a nomination in the list.

On his part, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (representing Mushin) wondered why the governor did not specify the local government areas the nominees would be representing in the cabinet and, therefore, moved that he be compelled to revert to the assembly on it.

Akinsanya equally said the governor could have looked inwards to pick technocrats within the party. Towing the same path, Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 2) and Hon. Temitope Adewale, urged the governor to reconsider the nominations.

Equally, Hon. Ladi Ajomale complained that the nominees’ list tends to disfavor a religion over the others.

TheCornet reports that the governor had forwarded 39 names of who he wants screened and approved to be commissioners in his cabinet.

The appointment of commissioners in Lagos state, as it is in other states, follows cronyism. The cronies, many of whom a governor might not have known prior to their nominations, are sponsored by the same political godfathers who installed the governor and to whom he is beholden willy-nilly.
