Lagos judge hands man life jail for running unlicensed boat

Josephine Oyefeso, a judge of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Lekki Tuesday handed down a life jail sentence to Happiness Elebiju, who was found to be operating an unlicensed boat.

The man’s boat had capsized, leading to the deaths of 13 passengers, including two children.

Elebiju was arraigned before Justice Oyefeso on 11 count charge, bordering on manslaughter and operating a boat without a licence.

Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, said the defendant had, on July 29 2020, loaded passengers onto his boat at Kirikiri heading to Badagry.

The prosecutor also told the court that Elebiju drove his boat recklessly and dangerously, leading to the death of some of the passengers.

The prosecution called five witnesses, who testified against the defendant during trial. The judge in her ruling upheld the argument of the prosecution and sentenced Elebiju accordingly.
