Judge makes clarification on Abba Kyari’s bail

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court has made clear that the bail he granted disgraced police officer, Abba Kyari, is dependent on the outcome of the other charges he is facing.

Justice Omotosho granted Kyari a bail bond of N50million in the false asset disclosure suit before him.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), had sued Kyari, and two of his siblings Baba and Ali for their involvement.

The judge discountenanced the prosecution’s claim that Kyari was a flight risk and might jump bail. Omotosho said that Kyari’s bail was in order, based on the evidence he (Kyari) refused to escape from correctional facility when he could during a recent jailbreak.

On the basis and, in the absence of a contrary claim by the prosecution, Justice Omotosho decided to accede to the bail request for Kyari and his co-accused.

In addition, Kyari is to present two sureties for his bail, each of who must own property worth N25m and situate within the jurisdiction of the court.

The sureties, equally, are to deposit their international passports, statements of accounts, title deeds of the sureties’ properties and recent passport photographs with the court registrar. Kyari’s release from the correctional facility is however subject to developments in his drug offence suit.

The decorated but rogue police officer has been accused of several human right abuses while he headed the Inspector-General Intelligence Response Team and the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Kyari’s run in with the law occurred after a video of his alleged attempt to comprise an anti-drug officer and conceal cocaine seized from a cartel surfaced.
