Fake News’ swirls around PEPC judges, one justice allegedly resigns

The President Election Petitions Court hearing complaints of alleged vote fraud in Nigeria’s last February poll has denied as another fake news the purported resignation of Justice Boloukuoromo Ugo.

A Twitter user, Umar Sani, had claimed that Ugo resigned due to “demands to knee-cap democracy”.

Sani alleged that the judge, in his letter, stated that he was asked to “cripple the independence of the judiciary” by ruling in favour of a certain political candidate believed to be President Bola Tinubu.

“Justice Ugo’s resignation has caused a serious uproar and a setback to the activities of the presidential election petition court,” Sani claimed.

Sanni’s claim comes after the National Judicial Council (NJC) debunked an earlier allegation that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Oluwakayode Ariwola, had a telephone conversation with President Bola Tinubu.

In a similar vein, Soji Oye, NJC’s director of information, says that Justice Boloukuoromo Ugo has not withdrawn his membership of the presidential election petition court.

Oye described the claims as “falsehood from the pit of hell”, according to TheCable report.

He urged that the allegation was a distraction and should be disregarded.

Equally, Josephine Ekperobe, secretary of the presidential tribunal, reportedly said the story is “fake”.

She said she spent time with the judge yesterday and that as of Thursday, she is yet to be informed of the judge’s purported resignation.
