Emefiele rearrested, as DSS, prisons officials clash in court

The Department of State Services rearrested Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, after a federal high court in Lagos had granted him a bail in the sum of N20million.

The DSS decision to rearrest Emefiele turned into a struggle between its officials and those of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on the court premises.

The embattled CBN chief is currently in the custody of the DSS, which is currently prosecuting him for illegal possession of firearms.

During the proceedings, government’s counsel Nkiru Nebo-Jones, a deputy director of prosecution at the office of the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), opposed Emefiele’s bail application. Nebo-Jones said she had yet to see the processes for the bail request as at the time Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daodu made the request.

Ruling, the presiding judge, Nicholas Oweibo, said the offence the DSS preferred against the former banker preferred is bailable; he then went on to grant the request.
