Why we arrested NURTW’s president, 20 others – Police

The Nigeria Police, FCT Command, has said that the president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW) Tajudeen Baruwa, and more than 20 others breached public peace. Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, revealed the suspects equally committed criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

One person had died during a fracas between two rival groups of the union at the Garki 2 area of its office. The police said they recovered three rifles and other weapons from the belligerents.

Following the disturbance, the police detained Baruwa and three other national officers of the transport union on Tuesday. They later moved the suspects to the former Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Guzape.

Transport unions operating in the country, notably the NURTW, is notorious for violent clashes among rival members.
