How Lagos became terrorists supply source – ISS

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has claimed that Lagos state once served as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) go-to market for gadgets and internet data.

In its report, originally published by Premium Times, the ISS claimed ISWAP used Thuraya Wi-Fi and splurged about $6,000 on monthly data purchased from Lagos.

The terrorists group had switched its supply to Chad, abandoning its former supply source.

Abba Yusuf (Abu Rumaisa), son of late Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf, heads the group’s media unit, which objectives include showcasing ‘ISWAP as a successful jihadist group’; to drive ‘recruitment and present a positive image as the top Islamic State affiliate globally; and, to handle relations with other violent extremist groups and Islamic State.

Equally, ISS said ISWAP is close to deploying drones for attacks in the Lake Chad Basin.

“Weaponising and adapting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a new trend in the group’s operational strategy, and could worsen the conflict,” it is stated in the report.

Citing sources, ISS said that the Jihadist group is “already trialling delivery drones to carry improvised explosive devices,” which would target ‘the military’ and ‘may impact humanitarian service delivery.’
