500,000 Nigerian workers to lose jobs over NAFDAC alcohol beverage ban – Union

About 500,000 Nigerian workers are expected to be out of their jobs following the ban by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, ban on alcoholic beverages produced in sachet and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Members of the Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association and National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employee, NUFBTE, Tuesday staged a protest against the ban.

The union took it protest to the Lagos State office of the NAFDAC, where they appealed that the ban should be reconsidered.

“Most of our jobs are at stake” Comrade Emmanuel Idogien, Vice Chairman, Trade Union, Lagos Council stated.

He added: “Many companies will fold up, especially those local industries that serve as raw materials to the producers.”

The unions advised the authorities to, instead, carry out public enlightenment on the dangers of excessive, and underaged drinking.
