Supreme Court rules on Delta governorship dispute Oct. 21

The Supreme Court will deliver judgement over the disputed governorship candidacy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 21.

Justice Amina Augie, leading four other justices, announced the date after listening to the submissions of parties in the suit.

The Court of Appeal had previously declared the Delta state house of assembly Speaker Sheriff Oborevwori as the rightful standard bearer of the party.

Dissatisfied, David Edevbie, another contender for the ticket, filed an appeal before the apex court.

Background to the disputeÂ

Sheriff Oborevwori, who is the candidate of the state governor, Patrick Okowa, emerged first at the party’s governorship primary, held on May 25.

David Edevbie, who is believed to the candidate of former governor James Ibori, disputed the outcome. Edevbie claimed Oborevwori falsified documents he submitted to the party. He said, for that reasons, Oborevwori ought not to have contested.

In a judgment on July 7, 2022 Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja upheld Edevbie’s claims and voided Oborevwori’s nomination. But the appeallate court would later upturn the judgment, in a ruling delivered on August 29, 2022.
