Scores of Congolese women, children raped

United Nations officials claim that some Congolese women and children were raped and subjected to other abuses during a mass expulsion of migrant workers from Angola to Democratic Republic of Congo.

Reuters is reporting that Angola has deported thousands of workers in recent months. The purge of the migrant workers by Angolan authorities has continued in the past 12 years, the newspaper quoted rights groups and the United Nations as saying.Â

It is believed that the latest purge affected about 12,000 Congolese workers.Â

The U.N stated in an assessment report it issued last month that “girls and women are arrested wherever they are, without the necessary needs, detained and then separated from their children and husbands, subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment, sometimes raped,” the report said.

However, Simão Milagres, aspokesperson for Angola’s migration authority,.denied the allegation. .

“That’s not true,” he said. “I can guarantee that there isn’t an institutional attitude promoting violence against migrants,” Milagres said.
