Rice growers lament, as flood destroy farmlands

Some rice growers have lamented their loss, after floods destroyed their farmland. The devastated farmland are situated in five local government areas in Taraba State.

Adamu Saidu, a farmer, said the flood destroyed more than 85 per cent of his farm. Saidu said that he planted seven bags of rice seed and was hoping to harvest more than 1,000 of paddy rice, but it is impossible to do so.

Rita John, another farmer, said had planned use the paddy rice she was hoping to harvest to pay back a N400,000 loan she took. John said the situation has dashed her hope.

Both farmers appealed to the federal and state government for help.

Justice Sani Muhammed (rtd), who is the chief of Mutumbiyu area of the state, said that the flood destroyed four of his rice farms.

The state chairman of Rice Farmers Association, Tanko Bobbi Andami, said his association had started compiling lists of affected farmers and extent of damage.
