Reps urge Tinubu to give report on underperforming ministers to legislature

The house of representatives Tuesday urges the President Bola Tinubu-led executive to present a report on ministers performance assessment to the National Assembly, when available.

The speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas stated this in his speech to his colleagues on Tuesday.

He lauded the President’s decision and urged the citizens to support it.

“The lack of a proper performance assessment framework is a significant shortfall in government and public sector systems and processes,” Abbas said.

He added that such underperformance will only result in “insufficient alignment of organisational strategic priorities and budgets with national priorities as contained in the 8-point Agenda of Mlr. President.”

He therefore expressed the “hope that the result of the government-wide performance report will be tabled before the National Assembly to provide lawmakers and the people of Nigeria an insight into the performance of government officials.”

President Bola Tinubu had threatened to replace ministers who underperformed and had set up a Policy Coordination unit, headed by the former Nigerian Ports Authority managing director, Hadiza Bala Usman.

Usman had said during a recent television interview that the assessment would begun in January 2024. She added that ministers are required to sign performance assessment bond that will be used to gauge their activities.

“We are going to have quarterly assessments of performance which will culminate in an annual scorecard.”
