Lagos police teargas disabled athletes (see pictures)

The Police in Lagos state Wednesday teargassed disabled athletes demonstrating in the Surulere area of the Lagos metropolis.

The video of the protest had surfaced on social media, with a blog @postsubman alleging on twitter that the police assaulted the protesters.

TheCornet reports that the aggrieved disabled persons blocked the National Stadium axis of the Funsho Williams Avenue and obstructed the flow of traffic during their demonstration. They are said to be protesting their unpaid salaries.

Denying the allegation of assault, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, said the protesters “were dispersed with minimal force”.

“A group of people were dispersed with minimal force, as prescribed by law, after they refused all persuasion to leave the highway for free flow of traffic.

“Many Nigerians had complained of being illegally restrained in traffic. We rose to the occasion. No assault, injury or death”, he tweeted.
