Presidential committee seeks end to states’ ‘nuisance taxes’

Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, says his team is prevailing on state governors to put an end to what he called “nuisance taxes.”

Speaking on Channels television on Sunday, Oyedele said that such taxes do not add value to the revenues of states or are usually not remitted into the state coffers.

Oyedele described the taxes to include levies imposed on goods or services, for instance produce that move from the north to the south. According to him, such taxes affect the poor negatively.

He said, “We are asking states to suspend nuisance taxes that just create problems, with very little revenue to show for it. We are already meeting with their governors, and in some cases, we have set up small committees to discuss with their teams. So once the thing is signed, there won’t be any excuse, it is to be implemented the next day”

He also stated that his committee has prepared a bill titled “Emergency Economic Intervention Bill”, which he would present to the Federal Executive Council and subsequently the National Assembly for passage into law.
