Police say why Lagos PDP governorship candidate Jandor was attacked

The police in Lagos say that the Peoples Democratic Party candidate Olajide Adediran was attacked by unknown persons because he made “unscheduled visit to a totally different location”.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, stated this in a string of tweets he published on Monday.

TheCornet reports that Adediran had gone on a campaign to the Badagry area of the state when persons believed to be supporters of another party candidate attacked and vandalised some vehicles in his convoy at Ikoga junction.

In what appears an early incident of political violence ahead of next general election, the police spokesperson Hundeyin believes Adediran should have  restricted his campaign for votes only to areas where he could be provided a police cover.

Hundeyin said, “It is imperative to clarify that the party notified DPO Badagry of the time and locations of their visits. Adequate security was provided.

“However, the campaign train made an unscheduled visit to a totally different and undisclosed location on their way back without commensurate notification to the police.”

The police equally said they are awaiting victims’ complaints to assist them “in the ongoing investigation” of the attack.

“The assurance is hereby given that no stone will be left unturned to arrest and prosecute the attackers,” Hundeyin said.

Adediran, a former journalist with the Lagos Television, led a splinter group of All Progressives Congress – known as Lagos4Lagos – before joining the PDP.

As his gambit for votes, Adediran pushes the nuances of his Yoruba primordialism.

He continues to weaponise his nativity of being an Awori born, feasting on the long-held sentiment that bona fide indigenes of Lagos are being excluded from political governance of the state.

His nativity as an Awori born underlies his ‘Lagos 4 Lagos’ governorship campaign. Awori, a subrace of the larger Yoruba ethnic grouping, is believed to be the majority indigenous stock in Lagos and in parts of Ogun state.

Adediran has the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, and the Labour Party candidate Gbolabo Rhodes-Vivour to contend for the coveted office.
