OAU VC ‘unhappy’ about lecturer’s assault on student

Abiodun Olarenwaju, spokesperson for Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, says that the institution’s Vice Chancellor Professor Adebayo Bamire is “not happy” about a confrontation that took place between a lecturer and a student.

The video of the said lecturer, identified as Dr. Ariyo, emerged on social media on Wednesday. In the video, the lecturer was heard asking the student to switch off his phone but he refused before the former had a brush with him.

“We’ve seen the video. The Vice-Chancellor is not happy about it. We are not known for such behaviour and we have decided to go administrative concerning this and we will make our findings known. But for the main time, we just want the students to remain calm. The VC has called the Dean of the faculty involved, who will get in touch with the Head of Department and get in touch with that lecturer,” Olarenwaju said.

One account of the incident has that the student, identified as Gift, mistakenly stumbled into the class while in progress. But realising he was not supposed to be there, Gift decided to leave before the said Dr. Ariyo accosted him. While he lecturer was addressing the student, the latter was fiddling with his phone as if he wanted to make a call. Infuriated, the lecturer ordered the student to switch off the phone. The disagreement escalated as seen in the circulating video.

The students’ union of the institution is said to have demanded a probe and a public apology from the affected lecturer for his conduct.
