NLC meets to take position on rising petrol price

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has said that it would have a meeting to decide what action to take on the rising petrol cost.

Chris Onyeka, NLC’s national assistant secretary, said in a report that the body would “give the Federal Government an ultimatum” to tackle the rising fuel cost.

“Let them prepare themselves because we are preparing. We are ready to fight back,” he reportedly said.

TheCornet had reported that NLC and its affiliate, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had, last month, planned to stage a protest against the government’s decision to remove subsidy on petrol. Labour however jettisoned the protest, based on the restraining order issued to it by the National Industrial Court.

Other unions, such as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and its cousin, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) equally lamented the hardship the nascent government’s economic policies had foisted on its members.

Prof. Kayode Adebayo, ASUU’s chairman( University of Lagos chapter), said life had become tough for the citizens.

He said, “The government needs to look at the plight of the citizens. We have what it takes to build a country that everybody will be proud of, not people who will finish (graduate) here and be looking abroad for greener pastures.”
