Nigerian leaders are no role models – Ooni of Ife

His Royal Majesty, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has upbraided political leaders for failing to present themselves role models to the younger generation while being responsible for the challenges facing society.

The youthful Ile-Ife ceremonial king said this in a statement he posted to Facebook, commemorating Democracy Day.

The monarch stressed Nigeria’s democracy ought to help its transformation into a nation, but fears that “deeper insecurity concerns, unrelenting support for ethnic nationalities, dishonest political actions, and our leaders’ combined failure to serve as role models for our children are all complicated issues that undermine the fabric of our country.”

“It is crucial to recall how our country has heroically fought all chances of disintegration due to political disparities, inadequate leadership, and a string of disasters that have blighted our rise to wealth.

“Regardless of how tough our governance and leadership road has been and how we have betrayed the idea of unity and nationality, we must nonetheless honour our tolerance, perseverance, and agonising desire to reach a common ground.

“The collective labours of our heroes’ past call those in positions of authority who are saddled with the governance of our nation through our constitution to strive for fairness and equity. Keep in mind that everyone who comes to equity must do so with clean hands. Are your hands clean?

“Your good actions and bad deeds will be scrutinised by future generations. Therefore, let us work together to create a Nigeria that you can all be proud of, even in your grave.”
