Pa Akintola Williams dies at 104 years

Pa Akintola Williams, the doyen of accounting profession, has died, aged 104 years. The highly revered accountant had celebrated his birthday on August 9.

Williams is reputed to be the first chartered accountant to emerge from Sub-Sahara Africa, after he qualified from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1949.

Williams had played a leading role in the  setting up of the Association of Accountants in Nigeria, which metamorphosed into the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, (ICAN).

After departing Nigeria, Williams had initially bagged Bachelor of Commerce Degree (majoring in Banking and Finance) from the University of London in 1946 before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in England.

He had worked with the Inland Revenue as an assessment officer from 1950 to 1952, after which he founded Akintola Williams & Co., the first indigenous firm of chartered accountants in Africa (now Deloitte & Touche Nigeria).
