Niger breaks diplomatic ties with Nigeria, US, France, Togo

The Niger military junta has broken diplomatic ties with Nigeria, France, the United States, and Togo. Niger currently faces political uncertainties following the coup de tat that sacked President Mohammed Bazoum.

Abdourahamane Tiani, a general and former head of Niger’s presidential guard, has since announced himself as  the new head of state.

Tiani on Thursday recalled the country’s ambassadors to the affected countries. They are Aishatou Boulamakane, Niger ambassador to the French Republic; Alad Magaskia, Niger ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Sidi Zakari, Niger ambassador to the Togolese Republic; and Limon Tingiri Mohamadou Tiari, Niger ambassador to the United States.

Sub-regional body ECOWAS vowed a military intervention if the junta fails to release President Bazoum and restore democracy to the landlocked country.

President Bola Tinubu, who is the chairman of ECOWAS, dispatched a delegation to Niger on Thursday. They comprise former military head of state Abubakar Abdulsalami and Sultan of Sokoto Abubakar Saad.
