MTN indicates readiness to roll out 5G internet service

Telecom giant, MTN Nigeria Plc, has said it is rolling out fifth generation (5G) internet services. The company and another, Mafab Communication Ltd won the bid for the 5G license, which the Nigerian Communication Commission put at $197.4million. Both licensees have till August 24, 2022 to launch their 5G operations.

Karl Toriola, the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria Plc, said the company is “prepared to launch on the day the IM allows us to do so and we will explore with the NCC if they allow.

“So we are ready, even before that timeline,” he said.

The 5G internet service is regarded as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). It is expected to deepen the digitization of the Nigerian economy. Its benefits also include smart living, higher connection speed, mobility and capacity, as well as low-latency capabilities.
