IPMAN suggests alternative to petrol

The Independent Petroleum Marketing Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) says it is considering the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol, which price has soared since the government’s decision to remove subsidy.   IPMAN’s president, Chinedu Okoronkwo, said this on Wednesday.

He said, “We have also discovered that bringing an alternative that is cheaper than even firewood, which is CNG, will not only create relief for the government and its citizens but is environmentally friendly.” Okoronko added that the CNG “is abundantly available in Nigeria than anywhere in Africa” and urged the government to give soft loans to producers of CNG as it was done in Egypt and India. “From there you can get vehicles to use gas instead of fuel,’’ he stated.

The union’s president affirmed his members’ support for the subsidy removal. On the increased petrol price, Okoronko said IPMAN would force it downward.

“Our association has the numerical strength to force down the price of fuel once they start independent importation of the product,’’ he stated.
