How influential Nigerians got Bawa released – report

After 133 days in the Department of State Service (DSS) custody, Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was released on Wednesday.

The Daily Trust, in its own report, claimed a security source squealed that some former and serving government functionaries pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to release Bawa.

President Tinubu suspended Bawa in June over alleged abuse of his office. Bello Matawalle, now a minister, accused Bawa of demanding $2 million in bribes from him. Matawalle was, at the time, governor of Zamfara State.

Peter Afunanya, a DSS spokesman, confirmed Bawa’s release.

“DSS confirms the release of former EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa a few hours ago,” he reportedly said on Wednesday.

The Senate had approved Ola Olukoyode as the new head of the EFCC a few days prior to Bawa’s release.
