Herdsmen ‘attack’ villages in Yobe

Some Fulani herdsmen have allegedly attacked Gurjaje and Malari villages in Fika LGA of Yobe State.

A security-centric network in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola, claimed in a report.

The villagers are said to have expelled the herdsmen after their cattle encroached on their farmland and destroyed their water melon.

Angered, the herdsmen fought back violently. The herdsmen are also said to have claimed that some of the villagers rustled some cattle and vowed to teach them some “lessons of their lives.”

“The invading herdsmen stormed the communities on motorcycles with most of them carrying bows and arrows as well as machetes.

“Though casualties are still uncertain, the invading herdsmen succeeded in burning down several housing units in the area,” the report alleged.

Nigeria has seen perennial clashes between herders and farmers in different parts of the country.

At a point, the immediate past government of Muhammadu Buhari initiated the Ruga Farm system while promising to re-establish grazing routes.

It is believed that apart from the nomadic nature of the Fulani herdsmen, desertification is another factor that drives the rearers down south.
