Gripping details of how two Nigerian men murdered Kenyan student

Two Nigerian men, namely William Ovie Opia, and Johnbull Asbor, are among the suspects arrested over the murder of a 20-year-old Kenyan woman Rita Waeni.

Others arrested in connection to the murder are four Kenyans and a Mozambican who was trying to flee the country.

The suspects reportedly mutilated Waeni in an apartment in the country’s capital Nairobi and subsequently binned her body parts.

Waeni’s cold-blooded murder took place on January 14.

Her head was missing, along with her phone and other personal items, a report said.

Kenyan police seized several items from the suspects’ apartment, including a butcher’s knife and small axe suspected to have been used in the killing and mutilation of the university student.

One of the suspected Nigerians, Opia, told the police he acquired the axe for self-defence.

They were arrested at a town named Ndenderu, about 20km (12 miles) from Nairobi.

The police said a human head suspected to be that of Waeni was recovered at the place, along with her phone and some of her missing items.

The two suspects have appeared in court but have not yet been charged.

Outrage by the incident, many Kenyans are urging the government to do more to address violence against women.

BBC reported that Waeni’s family were unable to identify the recovered head.

It added that the victim’s family had said last week that those responsible for the murder demanded a ransom of 500,000 Kenyan shillings ($3,100; £2,400) to release Waeni, even after she had died.

The gruesome way in which her body was dealt with has shocked people, including the chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor, who said he had “never come across such an incident” in his forensic career.
