Couple accused of multi-million fraud claim innocence

A couple, Simon Udeani and his wife, Dorcas, have maintained their innocence in the alleged multi-million fraud accusation against them.

The couple allegedly defrauded the complainant, Onugu Angela Chinyere, of her N2.7 million through a fake land deal.

During their arraignment before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court sitting, in Enugu, the prosecuting Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said that the Udeanis obtained the money from Chinyere on July 10, 2019 and December 19, 2019.

The said land the couple had falsely paraded as theirs is located “behind Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ala-Uguaji  along Enugu/Port Harcourt Road,” the EFCC said.

The agency further told the court that the offence contravened “Section 1 (1)(a) of the Advance  Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable  under section 1 (3) of the  same act.”

In their response, the couple pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, following which their counsel asked the court to grant them bail.

Ruling on the application, Justice Umar admitted the couple to a bail of N5 million and one surety in the like sum, before adjourning setting February 6, 2024 for commencement of trial.
