Four buildings collapsed as traders, residents face horror of Idumota market fire

Four buildings have collapsed out of the 14 properties damaged by the inferno that gutted a part of the Idumota business cluster, Lagos Island, on Tuesday. Traders and residents are faced with huge losses in goods and personal valuables.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, reportedly confirmed the incident.

Farinloye also said that emergency responders faced some challenges putting out the fire on time.

“We had challenges with water, but we were able to sort that out by contacting the Nigeria Port Authority,” he said.

He added that a generator placed on the penthouse of one of the buildings exploded, leading to the inferno and the large destruction of goods and properties.

“The fire started from the Penthouse of one of the buildings where a man was carelessly refueling a generator before it ignited the fire and escalated to other buildings. There were many generators in the building that further compounded the escalation,” he said.
