FG to distribute 252,000 metric tons of grains to states

The Federal Government is set to distribute 250,000 metric tons of grains to states at subsidized rate, beginning July 24.

This is part of the plan to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal and ease the economic hardship in the country. President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced the policy, which includes giving fertilizer to farmers to augment food production.

Bauchi state’s Governor Bala Mohammed reiterated the cushioning measure during a state house briefing on Thursday.  Bala had been part of the National Economic Council meeting, held prior to the briefing and led by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He said, “In terms of the quantity of grains that will be distributed, I’ve just conferred with the Acting CBN governor. They have more than 252,000 metric tons of grains and almost an equivalent number of bags of fertilisers that will be distributed within the timeframe (of six months).”

Nigerians are facing a hard time as costs of petrol, transportation, and food among others have skyrocketed.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had announced the Nigeria’s headline inflation as hitting 22.7 per cent–believed to be the highest in over 17 years. The Tinubu-led government had removed subsidy on petrol and promised to splurge N8,000 on 12 million households, but later announced it was reviewing the policy.
