5 soldiers killed in Anambra, police duck query

Five soldiers are reportedly dead, after gunmen believed to members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) opened fire on them on Wednesday in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. A civilian is also said to have died in the attack.

Report has the scene of the attack is opposite Zenith Bank in Umunze, while the incident took place between 1pm and 2pm.

The slain soldiers were driving in a Toyota Sienna vehicle before the gunmen sprayed them with bullets.

The police however failed to confirm the casualties. Ikenga Tochukwu, the spokesperson for the Anambra Police Command, said he did not know whether the assailants killed the soldiers.

“I cannot confirm if soldiers were killed, but can only confirm shooting along Umunze Road opposite Zenith Bank,” he reportedly told Daily Trust.

Ikenga said the command had deployed its men in the area to maintain peace and order.
