Fire outbreak will not affect Atiku, Obi’s petitions – Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has assured Nigerians the Monday fire that gutted a section of the complex would not in any way affect the presidential election’s appeal currently before it.

TheCornet had reported the blaze, which reportedly began inside the office of Justice Ibrahim Salauwa. The spokesperson for the court, Festus Akande, said an faulty electric wires sparked the blaze.

Akanbi spoke during an interview on Arise TVon Monday,

He said: “As a matter of fact, there’s no single connection, and it won’t affect anything in the court.

“This incident occurred in a chamber equipped with a computer and other equipment, as well as a functional library used by any justice occupying such chamber.

“The only thing that was affected were the books and computer equipment in the chamber. Even the books are replaceable.

“Also, it has nothing to do with it because it was from an electrical fault, which could happen anywhere, and there are things that happen daily.”

The presidential candidates of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi, and Abubakar Atiku had filed their appeals against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the election of incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

Their supporters, equally disgruntled over the election outcome, had unleashed threats and umbrage against justices of both Supreme Court and the immediate court below it.

In the build up to the election, Obi’s supporters had accused the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kayode Ariwoola of sneaking to have a meeting with the ruling All Progressives Congress’ flagbearer, now president, Bola Tinubu.

The apex court however denied the accusation and presented evidence to support its explanation that the CJN, instead, travelled out of the country to seek medical care.
